Toto, a shih tzu who was at Mrs. Jung's original shelter for 4 years, was returned to Daejeon Paws yesterday after being "fostered" since 2009. He has severe allergies, and it seems that his condition has not been managed properly. He has NOT been on a hypo-allergenic diet, and he has been treated for years with ointments that are meant for people, not dogs. The people who were keeping him couldn't afford the vet care that he needed. I don't know why they didn't bring him back to the shelter sooner, but there's no point in dwelling on that. I'm glad we have him back now and can do our best to help him. He desperately needs rehabilitation, which will require allergy testing, medication, treatment, and a special diet. Our goal is to collect 400,000 won to cover the initial testing and the first couple of months of medication and treatment to get him started on the road to recovery.
Can you help? Donations can be sent to Nong Hyup (NACF) account number 356-0601-8628-13 (Jung Nan Young) or PayPal account [email protected].
Toto's skin condition is severe. The skin over his entire body is pink and inflamed, and in some places it's bright red and painful looking. He has some lumps and boils that seem to be a reaction to over-exposure to steroid cream. He is obviously very uncomfortable, but yesterday, he was friendly with visitors to the shelter even though it's not easy for him to walk well. He just wanted to sit in someone's lap or sit in the sun. He clearly has the sunny personality of a shih tzu, but he's suffering so much that it's heartbreaking to see. Please consider helping him! Thank you!

Oh my goodness!! What is wrong with people?! Poor dear! I hope he is put on a really high quality, human grade, limited ingredient diet with lots of fresh meats too. A lot of the so-called "hypo-allergenic diets" available in Korea are NOT and still contain grains and egg and/or other irritants. What are you planning on feeding him? I will send money after work today. :)

Oh, and what's the name associated with that account just to verify it is the right one?

Thanks, Marla. For now, he's just eating cooked chicken breast, rice, and dog milk, and he's on some medications to help the initial inflammation go down. Mrs. Jung took him to the vet yesterday, and she's very hopeful that he'll be able to recover. He'll get some allergy testing done next week, and we'll gradually try to figure out the right diet for him. He needs urgent care to begin with, since he's just one ball of inflammation. Poor little dude. Thanks for offering to make a donation! The name on the account is Jung Nan Young. I'll definitely keep you posted about how he's progressing.

Also, please let me know (by private message) how much you donate so that I can update the event. So far, 180,000 won has been collected, and the goal is 400,000. Toto's first vet visit cost 90,000 won, and medication for a week cost 45,000.

He's already doing a little better just being on simpler food and appropriate medication. I visited last Sunday, and he was noticeably less red, though he's still in pretty bad condition and is a bit listless. The vet thinks he may have a hormone disorder in addition to allergies, but he says we should get his inflammation level down before doing other tests. I'm just glad to be able to help the little guy get some proper care. So far, we've collected 320,000 won towards the goal of 400,000! Thanks again!

It's hard to believe this is the same dog! This is Toto 2 weeks ago. I'll take some new pictures this weekend and post them.

Since this donation request was posted, over 300,000 won was collected for Toto's vet care. He has been on allergy medications and a special diet ever since, and he is doing much, MUCH better! He's still a bit weak, but the inflammation in his body has gone way down. He has a couple of small pink patches on his skin, but compared his condition two months ago, it's like night and day. Thank you SO much to everyone who donated to help Toto on the road to recovery! Every time I see him he looks a little healthier, a little happier...You definitely helped change the little guy's life for the better!
