It's with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart that I have to inform everyone that Leo suddenly passed away Friday morning. He was found dead in the rehab enclosure where he was recovering from a skin rash and was beginning new special diet to tackle his weight that seems have been a result of a hormonal imbalance following been neutered. Hopefully tests will find out exactly what was the cause of death but I think the strain and the stress of his weight may have finally been too much for him. According to Mr Park he was healthy and fine the night before, eating well, so this comes quite a shock to all.
To Leo, I'm so sorry you never had the chance to experience the spoils of a being a housecat but I think you know you were loved by so many volunteers. You really were a charmer and the king of the cats. Who will be the king of the misfits down the hill in the shed now?! I'll miss your chattiness and affections so much. RIP my lovely boy.

UPDATE: April 6
Leo has developed a slight rash on his tummy and back legs. It may be cause by a number of factors; stress, mites or the inability to clean himself because of his size. It would be so wonderful to see this friendly guy go into foster care to tend to this and his weight issue. Please please consider giving this guy a chance! I know he'll reward you with endless affection!

UPDATE: March 16
Barrel boy Leo is still waiting at the shelter. He seems to be getting bigger and bigger everytime I see him! But that means there's even more to love, though he does seem in desperate need of a controlled diet; I think he hogs a lot of the food from the other cats he shares his space with. His size does also seem to be impacting his ability to clean himself, especially his rear end so I'm finding I have to 'clean' him up a little everytime I see him. He doesn't enjoy it either!!
Leo is one of the sweetest, most affectionate cats you could ever meet and he loves nothing more than the company and the laps of humans; though with his current size at the moment, one's laps tend to go a little numb. Leo is in need of a loving somebody/family that can provide him with heaps of attention, space and/or a nice size apartment to roam around and discipline to get his weight under control and to more healthier levels. Please consider giving this adorable lad a home!

UPDATE: February 16
Leo is still the captain of his ship that he shares with three other kitties but I know he would LOVE a place and family to call his own! Please consider giving this talkative friendly feline a forever home!

Come and meet handsome Leo ( aka Uungi) !!!

UPDATE: December 25
Leo is doing well but has to spend this holiday season at the shelter. I'm so surprised he's still waiting for that special family to come along and wisk him away from the shelter cold. But Leo's a resilient one, and I hope your perfect family isn't too far away. Fingers crossed 2013 will be your year! Please consider giving this orange bundle of love a warm loving home this coming new year! If you're interested in fostering or adopting Leo, please contact and send a completed application form to Daisy at [email protected]. Application forms can be found here >>> http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/adoption-application.
PLEASE GIVE LEO A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
UPDATE: November 24
Leo was MIA for a couple times I visited recently and both I and Mr Park were worried and baffled to where he wandered off too. I was pining to be greeted by his meows and affections! But low and behold, today Mr Park informed me he has now taken up residence in the shed and area half way down the drive. No surprise really, I'm sure Leo is more comfortable on his own piece of turf now where very few cats roam! While he is not overtly confrontational or aggressive with other cats, Leo really appreciates his own territory I think, where he can be left unchallenged and is less stressful for him. It'll be important for Leo when he eventually gets fostered or adopted (and I know he will, how could you resist such a handsome gentleman!) that there are no other cats or animals that may make him feel threatened. He needs a family that can give him lots of love and attention and a place where he can be king! I know your kingdom is out there Leo!

Introducing loveable Leo aka 웅!
Leo has quite a story. Found on the streets of Siheung Si, Leo was rescued by a kind woman from a group of cats that were attacking him. This gentle giant tom cat came to Asan shelter hairless, scratched, bruised and covered in a nasty rash. Leo stood out instantly, his distinct meows and cries would often greet me every time I visited, and his very approachable, friendly affectionate personality was telling me he was seeking out much needed love and attention. His sad eyes tell of a hard past life, but all this unique tom wants is a warm lap, chin scratches and a chance in life, which he surely deserves. I think he would suit a home we he could be the centre of attention! Leo is a very calm, talkative cat, doesn't scratch or bite and loves rolling around in the sunshine.
Leo is neutered, vaccinated and is generally in good health. His hair has pretty much grown back, his rash gone and scratches healed. He's come a long way since he arrived! A general health will be required once he leaves the shelter. Currently he is taking some medication for stress and diarrhea which should be completed in five days time (25 Oct). Just a sidenote, previously there have been some cases of stomatitis ( like a feline gingivitis) and non fatal but highly contagious feline herpes virus in the shelter. Leo hasn't displayed any symptoms of either and his oral health seems satisfactory but a more thorough check of his teeth is needed. There is a possibility stomatitis symptoms can develop in the future and thus require some dental treatment and care. Most cats that are exposed to an environment where stomatitis has occurred WILL NOT develop it, but some cats will, and a depressed immune system does seem to make them more likely to develop it. However, if by any chance this arises, there is a fantastic vet in Seoul who specializes in feline dental care we can refer you too!
The key is to give Leo a healthy, happy environment for him to flourish in! Please consider giving this gentle giant a loving home! If you would like to know more about Leo contact Daisy on [email protected]

He looks JUST like my Mr. Putters - but with eyes! If onlyl I wasn't under vets orders to not take in any more fosters from shelters due to Mr. Putters health issues, and well, didn't have my neighbours.... But someone super lucky and able to snatch up this VERY handsome man is bound to come along! Hopefully before it gets too cold out!

I agree, Nina. I sat down for just a second last week and Leo set up shop on my lap. I never noticed him specifically before, and now I will always look for him. His face is priceless....what a great kittie.

Thank you Nina and Matt for your kind words and Julien for the lovely photo! I have such a soft spot for Leo, he is indeed a special one and despite the hardships he's had in his life he's so very trusting and friendly with people. I really love how he greets me whenever I arrive at Asan. Happiness for Leo is a warm lap and some human company. Funny, when I was leaving Asan last week after seeing Tart off, Leo ran after me down the drive!! Such a sweet boy! Want to get him into a home before winter...

November 17: Leo was MIA this shelter visit. I started to become worried, my usual Saturdays at Asan weren't been punctuated by Leo's meows and him following me around! The silence and his absence was unbearable! But then sometime later he returned, and Mr Park sent me a photo confirming this. I wonder what adventures he got up to?! I missed you Leo, but I'll be seeing you next weekend for some extra TLC!

Hi there Leo!
Leo is still happily residing in the big shed down the hill alongside two other cats. I always look forward to meeting him on the way up the hill now and exchanging some 'greetings' with him, and of course plenty of cuddles! If I kneel down, he loves to jump up on my lap and then climb up to my shoulders!! He has the most gorgeous purrrr! Leo is looking like a bit of a barrel lately, a bit more on the tubby side, but no doubt this and the insulated shed is keeping him warm! Please someone give this lovely cat a warm home for the new year!!!!

Leo loves people! And being outside. It seems he takes rather long walks. I don't think he will be happy kept indoors in a small apartment. So whomever adopts him should not only give him plenty of cuddles but also the opportunity to go outside!

Out of curiosity, what are the cats fed?
dbis
Apr 06, 2013 23:53

The cats are fed a mix of wet and dry cat food as far as I know, though I think it tends to be more dry food. Too much dry food I noticed makes the cats a little bloated since it retains a lot of water and is high in sugars. I also sometimes see leftovers of a meat mix of sorts with chicken, rice, fish Mr Park makes for them. Leo, typical of orange male cat, is a huge foodie! He is quite assertive of his territory and on more than one occasion I've seen him steal other cats food. I have to feed him separately so the other cats can have a chance to eat! He needs his own home and 'chef' ^^

He is...so the good news is he was taken out on Saturday for a vet visit to have it checked out. Leo is such a terrific cat and a strong presence in the cat house and around the shelter. He really lets you hear all about it with each visit. We will be watching his condition and post an update on his progress soon!

I spoke with Mr. Park today and he gave me an update on Leo. According to the vet, there's nothing seriously wrong with Leo, but he's probably suffering from a hormonal imbalance of some kind since being neutered, and that has led him to pack on the pounds. Mr. Park has started Leo on a reduced-calorie diet with a special kibble, and believes that Leo will get back to an ideal weight in a couple of months~~

It's never fun getting a kitty back to his/her optimal weight! When I came home from vacation my cats had put on a lot of weight! It took a lot of efforts on my part and theirs to get them back on track.
Good luck!! I guess I'm used to my big guy but he doesn't look that over-weight! Maybe he just takes great pictures?
I wish I could help with the fostering! He looks like such a sweet guy! Thank you for all your hard work!!

I received word that Leo died from a heart attack which is what I initially thought might have been the case. Poor Leo. It's so not fair. He was too much of a wonderful cat and didn't deserve to die this early on in life. Rest in peace gentle giant.

Poor Leo,Surely this should not have happened to him, just because he had a weight problem, what a waste of a lovely friendly cat.I hope the vet did not make a mistake or that he missed a diagnosis, surely not. So upsetting Leo so happy in his photos makes me sad. Keep happy Leo over the rainbow bridge with all your other friends. XXX

Watching Leo eat from his pink bowl could he have had teeth/gum problem? Was eating rather slowly as if difficulty chewing.
