UPDATE April 22
GREAT NEWS EVERYONE! Toby left Incheon Airport last weekend and has arrived safely in Seattle where he was taken in by a wonderful family of cocker spaniel lovers. We are all so proud of Toby for waiting patiently for his second chance, enduring unbearable cold and unrelenting heat, rain, snow, and everything else, for so long. He never stopped believing and neither did we! Keep checking back for more updates, as I will be sure to post them as they roll in.
UPDATE March 4
Clearly, Toby has been busy stealing some hearts at the shelter. Some new phrases associated with him include: "Jello Butt," "Gigantic Caramel Bunny," and "Chill Mode." He is *everything* a dog lover could ask for: spunky, loving, silly, and smart. All Toby needs is a chance to shine. Spread the word! Toby can't wait to find his home~
UPDATE Feb 19
"Hey there. I can't see. What's a dog gotta do around here to get a haircut?!?" --Toby
UPDATE Feb 7:
Toby can't wait to find a warm home so he can get rid of that long shaggy coat of his. One of Toby's fans has offered to sponsor the first grooming session for the lucky person that decides to adopt or foster him. So are we saying that he comes with a free behavioral assessment from a certified specialist AND a complementary makeover? You better believe it!!! Xx we love you Tobes. Let's find you a home in time for your favorite season, spring!!
UPDATE Jan 23:
"Where did all my friends go!? I'm the only cocker left? Please don't forget about me! I'm all alone and I want my chance too!!!" --Toby (sad face)
** Great news for Toby. A kind volunteer named June Kim (who is also a certified dog trainer) has offered the following services FOR FREE to the lucky family/person adopting him:
- a behavior assessment
- one coupon for dog consulting
- the book, 'The art of raising a puppy,' once the English translation is published.
So, in addition to bringing home this tub-a-luv, you will have an expert helping you make the transition from shelter to home life as smooth as possible!
From what the volunteers have observed, Toby will fit in just fine in a family with kids/dogs. His mannerisms and skills suggest he grew up in a real home before winding up somehow at the shelter. He knows to sit when receiving treats and he can fetch!! He hardly barks and never growls and is so very friendly. His personality is slightly passive. He stands back in the company of is fellow spaniels when food is offered and doesn't jump on visitors. His only "weakness," if you could even call it that, is that he tends to be SUPER excited when a potential family comes to visit him. I'm convinced that he's fundamentally a calm dog, just very eager to get out of his pen! Can you blame him?? I can't wait to see him thrive in a stable home that will provide him with high quality food, regular exercise, and most importantly, unlimited cuddles and affection!
UPDATE Jan 14: I think the human in charge of my profile is really keen on finding me a home! She even spammed the ARK FB page for me tonight. Hope my lucky break comes soon!! Signing off from the cold, windy hill in Asan, Toby.
UPDATE Jan 3: Happy New Year, from me, Toby the Teddy Bear! I'm still on the hill waiting patiently for you, my special person. I know you're out there!!!
Dear Toby,
Only 2 days till Christmas and you're still at the shelter waiting for your second chance. We promised to try our best to find you a warm home for the holidays, but it didn't happen. We haven't given up, though. We know that you will capture someone's heart one day. Can you hold on just a bit longer? The cold is probably getting to you, poor dear. The volunteers are coming this weekend to spread out some hay for you and your friends, so hopefully you'll find a little bit of comfort in that. I'm so sorry 2012 wasn't your year. Things will surely look up in the new year. You deserve so much better, you sweet, huggable, lovable thing. xoxo.
Hobbies: Sprinting down the hill at top speed hoping to run into volunteers, cuddling, scoring treats.
Likes: People, food, dogs of all shapes and sizes, *BELLY RUBS* (a must).
Dislikes: Freezing cold temperatures, ice stuck to paws and ears (currently experiencing).
Christmas wish: To spend the rest of my life with humans in their warm, loving home.
Please, folks, consider adopting or fostering Toby this winter! He is waiting for a ticket out of the shelter!! Could you be his winter angel??
Dear Santa,
I've been told that I have luscious locks and the longest legs ever seen on a cocker. I'm polite, moderately energetic, and give the best kisses. So why is it that no one has adopted me? All I want for Christmas is for my very own winter angel to take me home.
UPDATE Nov. 3:
Someone let one of the cockers spaniels out.. and you know what that means at Asan: ALL the cockers came running out, including Toby, who was soooo excited to have some quality cuddle time with the volunteers. Someone said he resembled a doll. I couldn't agree more. His face is just so unique and precious. He was friendly and silly as always. He got his belly rubbed after receiving a few treats and he was in heaven. This dog actually smiles when he is happy! Then.... he got too close to one of the kitties and she clawed at his face. Poor guy! He didn't attack the cat, just barked at her for a minute, confused, saying, "What? you don't like me? WHY!???!?"
UPDATE Oct. 27:
It's getting colder in Asan and Toby is still waiting at the shelter. His hair has grown out, making him look like a fluffy golden teddy bear! He would be so lovely to cuddle with during the winter. Please come meet Toby soon! He has unusually long legs for a spaniel so for you joggers out there, I'm sure he'd love to be your running-mate!
UPDATE Sept. 22, 2012: Mr. Toby was as spunky as ever today after eating three bowls of kibble brought by a volunteer. What an appetite this boy has! He surprised us by knowing to "sit" before receiving any snacks. So patient and smart. He even rolled over and allowed himself to get a belly rub followed by a round of cuddles. Toby spent the rest of his time in the shade relaxing and loving the attention, even though we had to tie him to the table for a bit : ) He is so good with other dogs and doesn't seem to mind cats either. Hungry dogs have a tendency to be aggressive around food, but not Toby~Another dog even stuck his head into his food bowl while he was eating and he didn't attack. Seriously, what an amazing dog!! You have to come to Asan and meet him! Just make sure you try to prevent the cocker stampede out of the pen when you try to get him out. (You'll know what I mean by this when you get there).
Toby is a wonderful American cocker spaniel at Asan shelter where he lives on the bottom of a hill with his fellow cocker buddies. Not only is he adorable, he seems to be in good health and loves to go on walks. He likes to be around other people and dogs, and loves loves loves his treats! Compared to his friends, he's a bit shy and timid, but once he's out in the open, his personality comes alive. If you are looking for a friendly, smart dog with an energy level that's manageable for even a small apartment setting: look no further! Toby is your dog! Won't someone give this smart, gentle, handsome boy a chance? Just look at that darling face!

The latest from a volunteer who got to spend quality time with this fellow last weekend: "Toby is totally awesome, he planted himself on my lap and didn't want to leave. He loves his buddies and I am glad he is not alone right now but but he very clearly wants a forever home and he is a bundle of love, totally adorable. Can you open your heart to Toby?"

Mr. Toby is still waiting! Last weekend he got some quality time with the volunteers and wolfed down an extra serving of dog food. Poor guy always seems so hungry! Toby also got his ears cleaned and even though they were a bit infected, he took it like a true champ. No nipping, no growling, just so patient and calm! I still can't get over how sweet he is. I called his name from afar and he came running down, tail wagging and all. What a people dog! Won't someone open up their home and their heart to this darling? He will be your best friend forever : )

Toby flips over on his back for belly rubs seconds after you meet him. I have no idea why no one has offered to adopt him yet. He's truly one of a kind. His face is ridiculously cute. His legs are awkwardly long. His demeanor is unbelievably friendly. He's a big tall teddybear!

I keep coming back to look at Toby's profile again and again... He is the EXACT dog I want to adopt! The only thing that's holding me back from taking him home immediately is that I live alone in a one-room officetel (not big, but not too small either) and I'll be away at work from 8AM to 5PM on weekdays. I haven't even met him yet and I already feel guilty about leaving him alone like that :( I'm going to go visit him at the shelter tomorrow morning - very excited to finally meet him!

I finally got to meet Toby this past Saturday! He and the other cocker spaniels were much more bushy and fluffy than in their summer pictures because of their long winter coats growing out. They were SO adorable. I recognized Toby's face straight away, and enjoyed getting to know him and taking him out for a walk in the snow covered hills. He was very intelligent, the only one of the four spaniels in the kennel to immediately "sit" on command, and you could tell from his eyes that he's quick at taking things in and understanding what you say. He was admittedly the most handsome and intelligent of the dogs, and looked like he'd need lots of exercise to get all that energy out. He's the perfect dog for you if you're looking for an intelligent, energetic companion that loves being active and playing, and
won't shy away from new challenges or tricks!
Here are some pics of his cute winter coat:

hi everyone: Please, if this profile speaks to you, give this boy a chance to shine. Like all the comments above indicate, he has that special quality about him. The way he looks, the way he longs for human affection, the way he runs up and down his pen with joy when he sees that the volunteers have arrived. He's one of a kind.

I can't believe Toby's still waiting so patiently at Asan for that special someone or family to come along, sweep him up and take him into their homes! As always, Toby is always so happy to receive any visitors at the shelter and will run up and down in anticipation of receiving some attention and affection. While Toby is lucky to have a shaggy furry coat to keep in warm outside, what he really needs is a warm loving home where he can get plenty of cuddles!! He is one very special little guy! Please please consider giving sweet Toby a chance and a home this winter!

Thank you, Daisy, for these great photos. Cockers aren't built for the Korean winters. They are meant to sleep in warm fuzzy places. Poor Toby is STILL available for adoption. Can someone please take him home so he doesn't have to spend the rest of the winter shivering outside?

So many Toby fans out there can't wait to see him find a new home. Even an experienced dog trainer recently offered free services to raise his chances! Check out his profile for more details! Just imagine him come spring when the weather warms up. He can have his matted fur shaved off, put on a nice spring sweater (I think pastels would suit him quite well!) and chillax in the sun. He will think he woke up in doggie heaven. The only thing stopping him from realizing that dream is a human willing to take him home.

Two things stand in my way of taking him home immediately: my small one-room officetel (also turns out the landlord doesn't allow pets) and busy work schedule! But this spring, both problems will be solved - in April/May, I am moving into a 3-bedroom apartment with my fiance whose work schedule is very different from mine so at least one person will be at home with Toby during the day while the other is at work! I know it's a few long, cold months away... But if Toby still hasn't found a loving home by then, we'd love to take him in with open arms!

I got to spend the entire day with Toby today :)
He is SUCH a little sweetheart, and even got some hair and gunk clipped from his eyes and face (thanks to Clare)! She also showed me how to clean out his ears, which were badly infected. He did squirm about a bit but it was probably because it hurt so much. When I was brushing some tangles out of his beautiful long winter coat, he just lay down and chilled out, eyes closed and tongue sticking out, clearly enjoying all the love he got today from all of the volunteers.
He's been moved to a smaller pen than the cocker spaniels' since he's the only cocker left now. Poor Toby, when he saw that humans were coming up the hill, he was SO excited and hopping around like a giant caramel bunny, wagging his little tail so hard that his entire butt was shakin like jello hahaha. He didn't bark that much even with all the big dogs nearby barking like crazy. In the midst of all the chaos upon the first contact, he still obeyed the Sit command like a pro!
I took him for several walks up and down the steep hill of the shelter entrance all afternoon to get all that pent up energy out, and he loved every minute of it. When I got too tired to hike up sometimes, I said let's take a break and sat down, and he lay right next to me with his entire back pressed firmly against my leg.
From today's various interactions with other dogs, food and humans, I saw no aggression. He did bark at a cat that was having a staring contest with him, but I took him a few feet away in the other direction and he immediately went back into Chill Mode.
It just broke my heart when we had to take him back to his lonely kennel. This poor guy just looks so out of place here. He has such beautiful golden locks and his intelligent eyes always have a warm smile for you. Please come and play with him when you have time! He is one big playful, gentle, wriggly bundle of joy!
*I will post up a bunch of pics later after resizing them at home.

Toby says hi from his new home in the USA!
His little (human) brother is a well behaved 8-year old and is so excited to have a dog to fetch ball with him in his big fenced yard! (His older doggy sibling is a 12-year old female who is not too keen on playing with the ball anymore!)
