Buchanan (Buck)

UPDATE:
In early September, Buchanan was adopted by a lovely woman in Seoul. He will now go on to spend the rest of his life as every dog should - tasked only with being a friend, surrounded by safety and love. His rescue story is complete! And Sujin and I are so happy to have been a part of it. Many, many thanks to this website, and to all the people out there who care.

Before Buchanan was Buchanan, he was a nameless creature being regarded and raised only as meat. He was living this way under stacked up pallets, at the the edge of a busy road with heavy trucks and machinery constantly passing by. We found him like this, along with another dog, a malamute, "Marley", on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, in this area there are many dogs being raised as meat. (If there still exists any sentiment among this site's viewers that dog meat comes from dogs that are somehow 'different' from companion dogs, this should instruct otherwise. Buck seems to be a purebred greyhound.) What made us pull over and speak with the owners was that Buck's 'leash' was so short that he could not reach his head to the ground, not even to drink from the disgusting water that had been left in a pan near his shelter.

After speaking with the owners, we decided to buy both Buck and Marley at the price they asked. We brought both dogs home where they received the first walks of their lives. Imagine a greyhound, an animal designed for speed over distance, never having even walked in its first 1.5 years of life! Remarkably, Buck responded to the leash very well, and over 3 days, had been trained to walk, run, and even stop (cautiously off leash!) along it's guardian. He is VERY intelligent and shows huge promise as an amazing friend.
