Update: 24 Sept 2013
Second set of vaccinations done, and nails clipped... a piece of cake for this good little girl!
Update: 23 Sept 2013
Little Nellie is a real ball of energy. At 11 weeks old she is so small, but ready to take on the world (her world currently being her big sister, Maria, our rabbit who is much bigger than her, and our love-bird, who seems to have no fear of the pups at all). She is loyal and adores everyone who walks in the door! She follows you around the house, and will be in your lap in the blink of an eye if you give her half the chance. Nellie is wonderful at using the pee pads around the house and although she is very little and easily distracted we are working on learning to sit on command. She tends to jump up a lot at the moment because she is so tiny that even on her hind legs i think she might feel at a disadvantage to her sister who can easily squish her out of the way for the awaited cuddles - this should get better with training and age. Nelliekins doesn't eat a lot, and she sleeps in a little tiny ball. She is healthy, VERY loving, equally lovable, and ready for her permanent home!
Update: 14 Sept 2013
Nellie and Maria went into a new foster home (on the 8th) who can give them more dedicated time and attention than me. There she cohabits with her foster parents, her sister Maria, a bird & a bunny! What a cool place! She stills enjoys water & had a shower with her mum on her first morning there. Her foster parents are working on her house training but it's been a bit tough having two energised pups together. Ideally Nellie would do well with another slightly older dog who she can play with and learn from. She'd also be very happy with other animal siblings. Nellie's mom weighs only about 5kg's so Nellie will probably not get much bigger than that. Nellie is due for her next vaccination soon.
Update: 3 September 2013
Nellie & Maria were both given their first vaccinations today. They were also given their first batch of heartworm prevention. The babies are growing up fast!
Update: 2 September 2013
When I bottle-fed Nellie and her sister from one week of age I was really worried about Nellie because she was so tiny. I didn't know whether she'd make it through as she was not a good eater. Thankfully, she pulled through & turned 8 weeks old on Saturday (31 Aug)! She is now ready to have her first round of vaccinations.
Nellie and her sister both had roundworm as well as Coccidiosis but they came through that swimmingly.
Nellie is the little weenie girl of the 2 puppies that Mãe gave birth to. She is literally half the weight of her bigger sister, Maria. She currently weighs 1.1kg & is a little bundle of sweetness! She also has attitude and pizzazz! I think I should have called her Dora, for "Dora the Explorer"! She even likes to shower with me if I leave the door open & is fascinated by the water. :) She is a brave little thing & loooooves to play (what puppy doesn't?). She bugs my older dogs a bit because she loves to climb on them (supervised only!). She is especially fond of their fuzzy tails and likes to try and catch the tail as the (traumatised) dog attached to it hot foots it away! She would do well with another puppy who likes to play.
Now that they are old enough, I am looking for a new foster home for them, or better yet, a forever home. I adore these two but having 5 dogs in my house is more than I can handle. More importantly though, having the pups has meant that I haven't been able to visit the shelter because of the risk of bringing something home with me & infecting them. I also don't have the time to devote to them & their training as they are now ready to start learning things. They use the peepads pretty well although they do have accidents occasionally when I'm not keeping a close eye. They are, of course, still un-vaccinated & too young to be going outside.

Meet Nellie!
Nellie and her sister Maria were born about one month ago. Their mum, Mae, came into the shelter with two of her older puppies that have since passed away (RIP). No one had any idea that Mae was pregnant! And then one Saturday evening out popped Maria and Nellie!
Unfortunately, Mae was ill and needed to be treated immediately. She could no longer feed her puppies. Nellie and Maria were taken into emergency foster care where they are being bottle fed and cared for. These two little girls have had a rough start. They were separated from their mum too early and then diagnosed with Coccidiosis (an intestinal disease). They have since been treated and are starting to resemble healthy, happy puppies!
Nellie is a quiet puppy. She hasn't become very confident yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. She is really relaxed and has no problem falling asleep in your lap. At one month old she weighs 550grams.
Nellie and Maria will be ready to start life with new families in about one month.
If you are interested in fostering or adopting Nellie, please don't hesitate to contact me.
