After a couple of false starts, Maum finally found the home he deserves with a lovely couple in Seoul. Good luck little fluffster, gonna miss you!
They don't come more adorable than Maum...
Update 30th Jan: While everyone previously thought Maum was a little shih tsu mix, a kind vet pointed out that he is in fact a lhasa apso! Lhasa apsos as a breed are smart, comic, loyal to their owners and wary of strangers - this sums up our Maum to perfection ^^
Maum (meaning 'heart' in Korean) is young, healthy, well-behaved, loves people and needs somewhere to go very soon indeed!
Update 26th Jan: Poor Maum (mah-oom) is still looking for his forever home. His time in foster care since early December has seen him lose an impressive amount of his 'puppy fat' and generally become a much more trusting, loving, relaxed and happy little man. He is just so affectionate, kind and he is incredibly happy to be out of the shelter and in a comfortable home, it's my job to make sure it continues for him after I leave Korea in just two months. This is obviously an anxious time for me because I want nothing but the best for him, so at this point I am looking for a stable foster for him to take over from March. Although of course I am so, so hopeful that a wonderful forever owner will come forward very soon indeed. Going back to the shelter will undo all the things he has accomplished in foster care and I'm worried the trauma would be just too much.
Maum is 100% healthy and up-to-date on vaccines (veterinary costs will be minimal for you). He is house-trained and only barks in the house if he hears someone walk past the door. He doesn't chew or damage anything whatsoever. In short, he is very well-behaved!

Maum is a 2 year old shih tsu / ewok / owl / koala bear cross and he's looking for someone to love him forever, and ever, and ever...
Update 13th Jan: Horrible news, Maum's adoption didn't work out - absolutely nothing to do with him at all, just the adopter's situation. He needs to find someone wonderful quick!
Update 10th Jan 2014: This lucky man is off for a trial adoption in Incheon tomorrow! His new potential mummy is very excited to have him but of course I'm still going to miss him terribly...Good luck big boy!
Update 5th Jan 2014: Maum is doing so well in foster care, he is truly a quirky little character. As a human he would probably be diagnosed with a hoarding disorder, but as he is a dog it's completely adorable! He loves to gather up slippers, make up, pyjamas, dog toys and socks and neatly arrange them for me to find on the bed when I get home from work - it's his artistic expression. He is definitely a foodie and tends to beg / sing for scraps when the humans are eating. This is something I'm trying to work on with him, but as a fairly greedy chap it's proving difficult to stop. His preferred sitting place is on the coffee table, which is odd but cute. He loves his walks and jumps like a little frog when he thinks it's time to go out.
Initially, he wasn't interested in socialising with my dogs but over time this is improving and he is starting to play with them for the first time. He also loves playing with people, he likes you to chase him round the room and is actually faster than he looks! He also likes to steal something of yours and make you wrestle it back. He is incredibly affectionate given his past, he likes to wake me up in the morning by licking my nose!!! He also seems to be a very intelligent dog indeed. He would make the most fantastic companion for anyone, although I think a single person, couple or family with slightly older children would be best.
As I am leaving Korea at the start of April he needs to find his forever home asap! As a formerly abused dog he has some trust issues regarding people and his time in foster care with me has been focussed on rehabilitating him and helping him to feel secure enough around people to trust again. This is going to be a long process, and he still flinches sometimes when I go to put his lead on - for this reason I really would prefer not to pass him on to another foster if I can avoid it. He is 100% healthy and ready to go to his forever family, please take a chance on this beautiful, loving, smart little man.

Update 9th Dec 2013: Little Maumee is doing very well indeed. His health check at the vets revealed nothing more than a wee ear infection which means he is completely healthy and adoption ready!! He got his first round of vaccinations and his ears are almost clear now. He is fairly indifferent to other dogs, but friendly all the same. He loves attention from people though, and will happily sit and play with a toy on his own, which is adorable. He is a tad on the tubby side (7.5kgs!!) but will hopefully slim down a bit as time goes on.
As previously mentioned, Maum came from a terrible owner who physically abused him and does have some trust issues with new people as a result- completely understandable! He will growl and bark a bit while he figures out if you are friend or foe, his recent human friendships have been fortified with lots of treats and cuddles ;-) He isn't a dog who will bound up to you trustingly, he needs a little bit of time to get to know you first and he is looking for an owner who understands this and can adjust to his ways, possibly an experienced dog owner would be best for him. I am absolutely convinced that he is not a danger to anyone at all and I'm sure that this behaviour will subside when he find himself in a stable environment with a loving owner. Otherwise he is just too bloomin' cute and I would love to take him home with me.

Update 3rd Dec 2013: Maum (pronounced mah-eum) made his way down to Mokpo on the KTX last weekend to live with me and my two pups Theo and Chingu. He is doing amazingly well and despite the fact I was warned he was an excessive barker at the shelter, he hasn't made a single yip!! What a star ^^ House training is 90% sorted in only 3 days and he just loves his twice daily walks. He's a vivacious, bouncy little bundle with stunning looks including the longest eyelashes I have ever seen on a dog! His favourite things about foster care so far include tennis balls, bacon and the sofa. Stay tuned for updates...

Silly Maum is an adorable shih tzu mix who will steal your heart! He has been at Daejeon Paws for about 4 months, and he is an amazing example of what a little love can do. Nowadays, he is a very friendly and affectionate little guy, but he had a rough road. Mrs. Jung rescued him from an abusive owner, and for the first several weeks he was in the shelter, he wouldn't let anyone near him. He would bark and growl at anyone who came into the building, and if you went anywhere he near him, he would snap. Now, he LOVES attention from visitors, and if I didn't already have enough critters of my own, I would take him home in a heartbeat. Maum has a very funny personality, and he makes everyone laugh with his silly ways. He loves to go for walks and seems to have been pretty well trained on a leash. He may have been housetrained before he came to the shelter because he likes to go outside to do his business. He's a bit smaller than the typical male shih tzu (maybe 5 to 6 kilos), so he would be easy to transport. If you would like to meet Maum, please let me know. He would love to meet you!

Thanks for the update! It's good to know that he's doing well. The pics are adorable! I'll make sure Mrs. Jung sees them. ;)

We are interested in learning more. Should we email the foster care or shelter?

I saw this little guy's post on a facebook animal rescue Korea page.
I'm not sure where he is located, but I am in Daegu, and if he needs a foster by the time you leave, I would be willing to foster him. I have a 14lb female shih tzu/lhasa apso. As long as he does well with her, I don't mind at all.
The only downside is, we leave in October so we would only be able to foster until then if he wasn't able to find an adoption home :(
