Description:

The world lost a beautiful old soul today. Mr. Dooley succumbed to his ailments today, October 3, 2012, at around 5:30pm. While he is lost to us, he went having learned what a loving home is. My heart goes out to all those whose hearts Dooley touched. To his foster mom, I am very sorry for your loss and very thankful that you were the one who gave him a home when he most needed it. Thank you very much, Nicole. Play, play, play, Mr. Dooley, beyond that rainbow bridge!

DOOLEY UPDATE #2
Mr. Dooley is officially in foster care as of this past Friday!!!!! I will keep everyone posted on how he's doing! Check out the new photos!!

DOOLEY UPDATE #1
Mr. Dooley has found his foster mommy! His new mom visited him in the shelter on Saturday and will take him to her home next week! Congratulations, Dooley! After 7 long years and dealing with a terminal illness, Dooley will know what it's like to be in a home! Great work to all those involved!

I will update Mr. Dooley's profile as I receive information from his foster mom. Be on the lookout!

Dooley is a very special senior who is looking to spend his last few months in a home and not in a crowded pen full of canine youth who simply have much too much energy for little Dooley to keep pace. (*IMPORTANT NOTE: ANY AND ALL OF DOOLEY'S MEDICAL EXPENSES WILL BE FULLY PAID FOR BY YANGJU ANIMAL SHELTER!)

Dooley is a TV superstar, but not because he's just so terribly attractive (although he is), but because of his heartbreaking health issues. One day, Dooley went to the vet's because he hadn't been feeling so hot, and the vet dropped a bomb on the caretakers at Yangju Animal Shelter. The vet said that Dooley had cancer, but Dooley knew better. His wise eyes told a different story, and so back to the vet he went where he received an even worse prognosis. Dooley had been misdiagnosed, and instead, Dooley's internal organs are simply shutting down, and his heart and liver are betraying him the most! This sad story was featured on a Korean TV show where I'm sure there were tons of digital gasps and sighs. But Dooley, being the trooper he is, decided to hold on until he can feel the comfort of his own bed, feel the touch of a family's hand, and feel the sweet kisses of love. But his strength and hope are waning and his wise old eyes are losing their glint because Dooley's time is almost up and his gaze is now focused on that rainbow bridge looming oh, so near. Will YOU be the one to hold Dooley's paw as he passes on to his eternal home beyond that bridge, beyond his medical woes, and beyond a care in the world?

Dooley's Required Care:
***** Any potential foster MUST be able to provide the following:
* Dooley takes medicine in both the morning and night, so anyone interested should be able to guarantee he would get his medicine every, single day. Dooley happily takes his medicine, as it is being mixed with wet food (Cesar's) and luckily it does not alter his behavior, so you don't have to worry about him becoming overly tired or thirsty or hungry or grumpy due to the medication.
* Dooley MUST visit his vet in Chungdam (near Gangnam, Seoul) every weekend to have his seroperitoneum (fluid in his belly) drained. Dooley is used to visiting the vet, so he is comfortable and well-behaved when travelling. He is also familiar with the vet and the vet clinic is familiar with him, so you wouldn't have to worry about explaining his medical condition or any other information to anyone.
* The foster should monitor and keep mental records about Dooley's behavior and condition, and then report this to the vet on his weekly visit.
****** ALL medical care is paid for by Yangju Animal Shelter. In the case of any emergency care, you can take him to the nearest vet and then transfer him to his own vet in Chungdam, all of which will be paid for.
****** As a foster, you will work closely with Yangju Animal Shelter on any health-related decisions.

Dooley in a Nutshell:
Dooley is still relatively active and enjoys short walks, can go up and down stairs (just not those on the side of a mountain), and loves sunbathing, so all you couch potatoes are particularly qualified for this chap! When his belly is full of liquid, he will slow down and lose his breath, but with the weekly visits to the vet, this shouldn't be a problem. He is housed with many other dogs and seems to do well with them, but a house with either no other dogs or only one, calmer dog is best. He is NOT incontinent, but has been living in the shelter for 5-7 years, so he is not house trained, and in his short time left on Earth, may never be. Since he is still active, however, you can take him out as often as he needs, so it's more than possible to prevent any accidents. Even though Dooley is so sick, food still brings out a twinkle in his eyes and he responds very well to anything involving food!

Those who know and love Dooley recognize the dire need to get him into foster care as quickly as possible. They are willing to help in every way possible and will pay ALL medical expenses. As for other expenses, crate, toys, cute clothes, etc., these would be the responsibility of his foster, but basic living needs, like food, may be negotiable. As Dooley's foster, all the resources at Yangju would also be available for you. Any time, day or night, if you have any questions or concerns about Dooley, someone will be there for you and will help you every step of the way, which is a TRUE rarity in the fostering world here in Korea.

Please, please, PLEASE help this old boy feel what it's like to be in a home. This is, unfortunately, a hospice care situation, so please be aware that as a foster, your image, your hand, and your kiss will likely be Dooley's last.

What's going on with Dooley?

Amanda-n-Leeloo's picture

We have received one application for foster care for Dooley, and I sent it to Gemma, who reviewed it and translated it, and then sent it to Yangju. Hopefully things will work out and Dooley will go into foster care in the next few weeks!

clare_bell's picture

I really hope so!! Holding thumbs for Dooley!!

Amanda-n-Leeloo's picture

Yangju is currently reviewing the application and will be in contact with the potential foster mommy when they have any questions. If everything goes well, Dooley could be in a home as early as the second week of August!

Can we have an update for little Dooley?

Amanda-n-Leeloo's picture

Perfect timing!!! I just got an update today from the powers that be. Sorry for the sparse posts, but I have no say in what's going on, I'm simply the messenger. :o)

Mr. Dooley will be visited on Aug. 15 by his potential foster mommy. She will take him home that day and have a home visit done. So, hopefully, if everything works out, he will be in foster care on Aug. 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY FOR DOOLEY!

Here is a message from Dooley's foster mommy:

"He's a real easy-going guy. I like him a lot but feel so bad for him because life at the shelter is pretty much all he knows, so he's so shy and out of his comfort zone now. He is quiet and well behaved, but odd, like when I try to take him out to do his business, he freezes up and refuses to walk while staring into space. He isn't potty trained and has been peeing in the same spot in the living room. He poops wherever nearby. It's okay though. I knew he would probably do this and I'm used to cleaning up after my bunnies, who often pee over their pad while standing on it. It's just a LOT more urine than the buns! ha~
Leo Mendoza suggested I put a gate around him and not let him out until he pees and when he does, reward him big time. I should try that asap.
Also when we go out and another dog comes up to greet him he isn't friendly back. He sort of gives them the cold shoulder along with a look that say "what the hell are you doing?!?!" if they sniff him. He's probably just petrified.
At least my rabbits don't mind him, not even the fussy one. The only thing he wants is to eat their poop

As he progresses, there is also a dog cafe near my house. It's called I Love Puppy. ^^ "

It sounds as if Dooley is right on par as a new foster dog!
