William

William is still available for adoption.

What kind of special needs does William need? His story IS heartbreaking.

I selected "special needs" on William's profile because of the special care he will need after living in our shelter for so many years. I just want to be sure that whomever adopts William is aware that although he WILL be the perfect, loving, wonderful pet- he will need some extra love and care to get him to that point.

Yes, with some extra love and training, he would be a wonderful best friend! Corgis are best.

I wish I could! But, I'm not going to be in Korea for several months. I still hope the best for him :)

Sonyajin: would you foster or adopt him if someone were to be able to foster him until you arrive and get settled in Korea?

We discovered that William has quite the youthful spirit.

Sadly, William has had a couple of interest but no one to come thru for him. He is at least 6+ years old and has lived with the same handful of dogs for years. His home is a concrete floor and a small wood platform.

On initial meeting he is not too affectionate, would you be if you had been overlooked for 6+ years?! Can you imagine how many times he was hopeful that this was his time, just to be passed up by another human? Most dogs when you take them out of their cage to visit, they immediately start smelling everything around them. This doesnt mean there isnt a connection between you and them, it means the animal is catching up on doggie related "news." Additionally, they are going to start peeing immeidately. This is for two reasons, one they want a chance to leave their story behind and they do this by leaving your scent. Another reason is dogs naturally do not want to elimimate where they sleep, of course sometimes they must but many will hold it as long as possible hence going the first minute they are out of the cage.

Sadly, this behavior was misunderstood by two visitors to mean William was uninterested in them.

William will love to go on walks with you, he will love to play fetch, he will cherish a bed as he has never really had one before. But most of all William will enjoy just chilling out being ever so appreciative that you took notice of him, and did something to change his life.

Please consider giving this pup that has lived over 6+years on a concrete slab a chance at a warm home, good food, and bouncy balls to chase this Christmas.

William may live in a bleak enviroment, but he sure is great at making lemonade of the situation!

He's indoors though isn't he so at least it's not as cold as Asan? He looks a little longer in the leg than you'd expect for a corgi. He's got quite a big dog family there it seems.

I really hope he finds someone special soon. He's gorgeous.

Nobody out there in Daegu interested in fostering or adopting this little guy?

Ah! William is so great! He's really cute, sweet, and funny.

Sunday, I went to visit William (because I kind of think he's awesome). I decided he needed grooming, and he had no problem with it. I didn't do a thorough job, but I remember my own dogs complaining about it. William didn't - he was focused on other things, and didn't raise a single complaint about his grooming. He's just so wonderful and endearing! He also let me pick him up when I took him out of the cage (he was squirmy and excited) and let me pick him up and put him back in the cage with no resistance (he was worn out by then). Really, he's a catch, and even though it's selfish, I'm hoping no one adopts him before I get my own place.....

Spent some time with William on Sunday. Here's a bit more info:

Willy is very spry for an older gent, so don't let his age fool you! I had to alternate throwing the blue ball, green dog bone and red rubber chicken for about 10 min. to get the squirm out of him, so I could put his harness on. He's got sharp ears, and as soon as he brought ball/bone/chicken back, I would squeak another toy, throw it, and he would race after it. 90% of the time, he got to it before the younger shih tzus did. (Like I said, he's very spry.)

He seemed a little confused/reluctant to go out the gate when it was time to go, but got the hang of it right quick. It was very interesting - he never stopped to mark his territory or sniff through garbage. He did really well on the leash. He's very mellow, and isn't as hard to handle as some dogs. There was a boy with a soccer ball at one point, which really got his attention. (He's something of a ball connoisseur.) However, he didn't freak out, or whine, though he might have pulled. (My companion had the leash). It was obvious he wanted it, but he was chill about it.

And, for the first time since I've known William, he was really affectionate. Whenever we stopped to rest on the benches, William would come and put his paws on either my leg or my companion's. We would pick him up and set him on a lap, and he was just as content as could be, and stayed there until we lifted him off.

Towards the end of the walk, while sitting and waiting, he gave my hand a few licks, and when I adjusted his harness, my face was close and both times he gave me a doggie kiss. Personally, I'm not a fan of doggie kisses, but I was excited that he did it. It shows how much affection he has to give, with lots of potential for more.

After the walk, when I tried to put William back in his cage, he was keen to go play with the balls some more. Though I'd jogged with him and gone on a decent sized walk, and though he's a "senior", he was still looking to play with those balls! (A ball budget might be a good idea....It's all he wants for Christmas/Birthday/New Year's/Chusok.)

Other information that might be helpful:
The corgi/jindo (?) mix also means he's a champion shedder, and he seems like a champion nail-grower, too. (He didn't seem too bothered by them on the walk, though.)
As far as training goes, Willy doesn't strike me as a hard one to train, as long as the trainer is patient and understanding.

I looked up Pembroke corgis on AKC, and though Willy is a bit more delicate and fox-like, he seems to take after that side of the family quite a bit.

Alas, I love this little dog quite a bit. The more you get to know him, the more he'll grab at your heart-strings.

I'm wondering, (not because of Danbi, that's coincidence) how much would William's teeth potentially cost?

Aw, dogs like William that have NEVER had the chance to experience the love of a family break my heart! Surely someone will step up and give this sweet boy a home before it's too late?!

I finally got to visit William. I was pretty happy to see him running around in the courtyard when I got there. He seemed very chill and happy to see me, though I think this was due to him being out and about for a while, not necessarily remembering me.
I brought some treats for William. It was kind of heartbreaking. All the shih tzus knew exactly what the bag was, and I had a little flock following me around. William just kind of followed with them. He didn't actually seem to know what the bag meant. I ended up never even opening the treats, because no one was around to ask. (I'm not sure what protocol is with treats at the Daegu shelter.)
It was great to see William again. I hope that his teeth can get fixed sometime in the next month.
I, meanwhile, need to somehow have a conversation with my landlady about having a dog....

Just about the greatest dog ever. :)

I spent some time with William one day last fall when I went to adopt my Layla, formerly Princess on ARK. He was such a sweetheart then, I can't even imagine the good that a year's worth of even minimal attention has done for his already lovely spirit.
Just as a note, Princess was a "forgotten shih tzu" and had been in the Daegu shelter for at least 8 of her 9/10 years of life. I am completely in love with her. I wouldn't call her a brilliant dog but she trained so easily!! These animals are so appreciative of even the littlest things and they take to routine and care very quickly. She was completely housetrained within the first three months of living in my apartment. The hardest thing for her to figure out was what toys were for!
Adopting her was the best decision I have made in Korea and William could easily be someone else's best decision:)

William still needs a foster home. I've saved up a little towards a vet visit and tooth scaling, but it would be dangerous for him to return to the shelter after that. I can't take him right now, because I'm leaving the country for a few months. William has a nice thick coat, but he's over 8 years old. I'm beginning to worry a bit about him, since he's an older gentledog.

Is William fixed? I noticed he was trying to -um- mount Belle. I kind of thought he was, but I just thought I'd check.

Looking at William's silly face makes me SOOO happy! I love this dog :)

William's been working on his fetching skills. He's beginning to get the idea that if I throw the ball, he can bring it back....and I'll throw it again!!!!

William is an awesome little man! I walked him the other day and he was so good walking on the leash. I took him out with two other dogs and he had no problem walking as a pack. He's always so patient and loves to be petted.

Such a lovely spirit he has! I don't understand why he's still there?! He is obviously good with dogs, has a lovely personality, isn't aggressive, is in great shape.... He's been there 11 years! He has paid his dues! Surely someone has a place in their heart and home for William!

William is the cutest, sweetest, most loving dog I've ever met (with the exception of my childhood pups). You'd be crazy not to fall in love with him!

Aw Reading about William breaks my heart. I was just in Daegu two weekends ago, I don't remember seeing him there. But then again i believe the lady told me that there was another KAPs shelter in daegu.
