Jeju Ugidongmul Shelter

제주유기동물보호
Location: Jeju City - 제주

The Ugidongmul Shelter is a private no-kill shelter run by a Jeju high school teacher with the help of volunteers. The shelter was under an eviction notice in 2012 and moved to a new location outside of Jeju-si in early 2013.

The shelter is home to both cats and dogs and sometimes other small animals. The animals here are either abandoned, lost, or homeless. Many have previous house training, and they come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Animals are available for adoption into forever homes, however the shelter would like potential adopters to visit the shelter at least three times before adopting an animals.

Currently there is no foreign volunteer group that visits the shelter. Korean volunteers visit regularly however, and new volunteers are welcomed.

For more information on the shelter or to find out how to volunteer, please visit the Ugidongmul Cafe website, which can be found under "Links" on the right -->
A Daum registration is required.

If you are in Jeju visiting or living there, just wanted to tell you that I had such a lovely time visiting the shelter. I was on vacation, and a friend and I took a city bus from Seogwipo to Jeju City. They have recently changed the time to noon on Saturdays. It was nice to meet some local volunteers, and Kara and others were very helpful and welcoming. As always, it's enjoyable not only to help the animals, but also to socialize and get some exercise. I've found on the shelter trips if you just want to walk a dog and clear your head you can, or if you want to chit-chat and socialize, you can. The shelter is clean and the animals well-cared for. The walking area is gorgeous, too. Once we got onto a trail, the volcano was on one side, the view of the ocean on the other, and lots of little farms and volcanic rock walls. You can stay for as long or as short as you like. We walked dogs for a couple of hours. There are so many amazing, adoptable and friendly dogs wanting some love and attention. I wasn't sure about taking time out of a vacation for volunteering, but it was such a nice part of the trip, and I will visit again if I come back to Jeju. So give it a go--the dogs would really appreciate it!

My son was teaching English in Jeju and adopted a beautiful little Chihuahua from Jeju Ugidongmul Shelter. He wanted to bring her back home to England, so sold his laptop and all his belongings to buy her a seat next to him on the flight home, rather than have her travel in a box in the hold for 14 hours. She now lives with us in our home, she is part of our family and is very happy and secure. We would love to know any information about her life in and especially before being in the Ugidongmui shelter. We believe she was called Mongshill in the shelter, we now call her Pikachu or Pika for short. Where did she come from, what was her life like? Here is her profile from the shelter. http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/dog/716
