This young lady is a very special case. Her story is truely heartbreaking, and it really shows in Maddies behavior and fear in her eyes.
In speaking with a fellow volunteer, Maddie came to Asan fairly recently where she delivered a liter that all passed away. When I walked past her cage, she was hundled in the back shakely uncontrollably and would not even look a human in the eyes. I decided to sit by her for awhile to see if it was possible she would open up. After several moments.. nothing happened and she grew more scared. A worker at the shelter agreed to lift her out to test the limits and see what would happen.. Upon exit from her cage, she raced under the cages and turned her back to all people. We managed to get her out, and with persistence she did walk a few feet with me. When we entered sunlight, she appeared to "breathe a sign of relief". I dont know if this was because she could finally see sunlight, or if she had slight reassurance she was finally safe. Either way, slow progress was atleast some progress. A lot for a dog with such a sad background. Maddie was out with me about 30 minutes.. and did make great strides in that little time. It appears that she is completely scared of humans, and if left, she will hide and turn her back to the world. This girl IMMEDIATELY needs someone to love her. She is young.. so she has a lot of time to forget her past and look on to a healthy and happy future -- but it must be with someone who can provide her extra love, and lots of self confidence. She needs someone who wont force her to make great leaps in one day.. but one who will let her get settled, explore her surroundings, and make her feel safe. The look in her eyes is heartbreaking. She wants to be loved, and love in return.. this is clear. The shelter life will not allow her to do this. She needs a quiet, and 1:1 relationship that will allow her to become the beautiful, sweet girl that she is. Please, please give this girl a chance! She will get into your heart within moments.. and not be forgotten. She is waiting -- alone, hundled in her cage for that special person to show her what real love is.

It's like a new beginning for Maddie. She is doing so well!
We didn't manage to make her smile yet but look at her now! How could imagine it even a few week ago!

This is such a wonderful picture! Maddie looks really awake, trying to check out her surroundings. I can't wait to work with her again. Next time I am trying to take her for a short walk ;)

She did so well today! It was lovely spending time with her. She has seen some hard times but she trusted us today which was amazing. I am excited for that trust to grow. She is such a sweet girl. I hope that she gets into a home very soon!

Maddie is an amazing dog and made so much progress since I first saw her in October. Back then we weren't able to take her out of the cage. Last weekend she sat quietly with us on the ground and I could feel her trust growing every minute. I am sure that her condition will become better as soon as she leaves that shelter and finds a loving home. I even think that kids and other animals would be fine. She didn't show any sign of fear when other dogs came sitting with us on the ground.
I'll be back this Saturday to work with her again and I'm gonna write an update here afterwards.
I have much hope for her now!

Madison did great again today. She visited with us for about an hour and even went on a little walk. It was A-Mazing to see her explore and, really, be a dog. We had about 20 minutes of quiet cuddling time, about 10-20 minutes of walking, and then another 20+ minutes of cuddling. I feel like i'm a bad judge of time when i take her out because i'm just so shocked that she is out and so greatful that she is getting more comfortable. She still has a long way to go, but has made leaps in the past 2 weeks. Day by day Maddie...

You're amazing with her Michelle! I can't wait to see Maddie 'recover' from her trauma because she is a beautiful and obviously very sweet girl. (It was amazing to cuddle her!)

Maddie must have been missing her 'trusted' humans this past Sunday. I had hard-boiled eggs for all (well, almost all^^) the dogs and had to throw hers near to her house as she wouldn't come more than her head and shoulders out of it. Later, I sat outside her cage and talked to her for about 20-25 minutes, holding a treat between the bars, but, although she was interested, she stayed mostly in her doghouse. This little girl needs to go to a home. :(

No, Unfortunately not.. Maddies case is quite sad. She make GREAT progress with volunteers on the weekends, but as soon as they leave she slides back. All Maddie really knows is fear. She opens up miles every minute that time is spent with her - but really needs more 1:1 time. The weekend time is wonderful for her as it provides confidence and reassurance shes loved. However, the moment shes put back into her pen all the fear and anxiety return. She really deserves a family that will provide positive reinforcement and continual love.. Shes a whole different dog in a matter of 15 minutes when cuddling with volunteers - I only imagine what a day or two would do.

Cocker Spaniels are great! I have two rescues that both came from Asan. I am sure that once she is in a home around people on a more consistent basis her true personality will show.
Maddie, Emma and Dantes have their paws crossed that you will have a home soon!

I'm about to be home a great deal over the vacation period. I have a lot of experience with dogs, but none with fostering. I'm interested.

Madison was amazing yesterday. There were some new volunteers and she let some of them take her out! Complete strangers! It was incredible. She was still very scared, but went for a walk with them which is such a HUGE improvement. I took her out and cuddled and walked with her as well. It was getting cold so we went close to the heaters (where there were a lot of people) and she seemed ok. She wasn't shaking, her heart wasn't racing. She is making so much improvement each time i can only imagine what would happen if she had a home. Please consider this lovely girl. She is trying so hard!

Maddie was doing very well yesterday! I was extremely surprised to see her out and wagging her tail when she heard all of the volunteers arrive. I stopped by to give her some treats and say hi.. she did respond, but remained alil hesistent. There is a couple going to the shelter tomorrow to possibly foster her. fingers crossed!! this girl needs out ASAP!!
I will keep everyone updated on her status :)

Stefaniee- Can you please update Maddie to "Adopted?" She found her forever home with us :)
She's doing amazing since we've had her. Every time I come to the living room, she gets really excited and wags her tail. Her and the cat are even getting to know each other. She even tentatively tries to snuggle with us the last few days. I posted a picture of her napping with Rob and chickpea on the facebook page.

She's doing really well. She follows me everywhere and loves to cuddle at night. Every morning, she squirms around until I give her a proper morning belly rub. She's still a little fickle with her food. Her shy nature and history of needing to hoard food leads her to get nrevous about eating or try to bury her food in the bed and couches. But, she's improving each day. And she loves going for walks. Big goofy smile on her face the whole time :)
