UPDATE: Jan. 17, 2013
It's been a roller coaster of a week for Joey and I as we are once again trying to prepare for flight!
Joey has been fortunate enough to have had yet another offer of help from across the ocean, and this time, because her new foster is in Toronto, we will be able to take advantage of it!
This is my first time trying to prepare a dog for flight, and it has been extremely stressful! Fortunately, things seem to be somewhat under control at this time and I'm hoping for no more surprises. As each hurdle is cleared, it brings us closer to the goal, and the next hurdle is actually getting Joey on the plane.
Because some wonderful people have offered to courier her, the cost is significantly lower than it would be if she were to fly alone. I have also recently found out that the cost of Joey's flight will be covered by ARK members, so that is one less thing to worry about! Thanks so much everyone!
Please keep this little girl in your thoughts over the next little while- She has been through so much in her life, and she's such a sensitive individual, so it all takes its toll. Fortunately, she is going to a wonderful rescue group called "From My Heart Rescue" and her future is looking very good!
Updates will be posted here and on her profile as they become available. Thanks to everyone who has been following Joey's story and has contributed to her progress!

UPDATE: Jan. 10, 2013
Although there have been some extremely kind offers and so many people wanting to help Joey get a forever home, we keep running into significant barriers and obstacles that are seriously limiting what we can do, and therefore, Joey will be remaining in Korea for the immediate future, and she is again, on the lookout for a forever home. I also recently found out that Joey most likely has a hernia, which could potentially cause serious problems for her in the future if it is not corrected.
On a more positive note, the family in Canada who was hoping to adopt Joey has graciously offered to pay for her spay surgery, which should greatly increase Joey's chances of getting adopted, and the vet has recommended getting her hernia fixed at the same time which he offered to do at a discounted price.
So the immediate goal for Joey is to take full advantage of the amazingly generous offer by her Canadian admirers, and also get her hernia looked after to avoid more serious problems down the road. That means Joey will be going under the knife in the fairly near future, and it also means that there is a new donation request blog on the ARK page.

UPDATE: Dec. 30, 2012
We are still urgently looking for anyone who is travelling to Canada willing to courier Joey!
If you or anyone you know may be able to help, please contact me as soon as you can!
Joey's ultimate destination is Kenora, Ontario, Canada, but even if you can just get her over the ocean, it would be an enormous help!

The great news: Joey has found a home!!!
The challenge: Getting her there...
Because of some networking a past Asan volunteer has been doing for Joey in Canada, our beautiful little Maltese has found a family who'd love to give Joey her well-deserved forever home. This family lives in Kenora, Ontario, Canada, so we now need to find a way to get Joey to her new home.
What would be. by far, the preferred method would be to find someone who is traveling in that direction willing to bring Joey along with him/her. This would be far less expensive and probably a bit easier on Joey. If you have any travel plans to this part of the world in the future and would be willing to have Joey tag along, please contact me as soon as you can. You would be providing the final and critical piece to ensure Joey's happy and safe future!
If you or someone you know may be able to help, please email me at [email protected]

Beautiful little Joey:

Joey is a beautiful little girl with so much to offer her forever family! Living in foster care, Joey has had a chance to build confidence and overcome some of her fears. She has adapted well to living in an apartment. These days, she is always eager to go for walks- long or short- and if she is comfortable with a particular person, she can be enthusiastically affectionate. She tolerates long days cooped up in the apartment while her caretaker is working, and she only barks when she hears someone at the door. Joey is an excellent size for living in an apartment and her vocalizations are limited to some happy little "hello-I'm-so-glad-you're-finally-home" yips to greet her person and these adorable (and quiet) growly howls she'll express when she is particularly happy about something. On top of that, she is house-trained, she is proving to be very quick to learn basic commands, quite good on the leash, and generally excellent around other dogs. Joey loves spending time with her foster brother, a small poodle.

Her personality has really been shining as she continues to get more confident by the day. Her two favorite things in the world are treats and walks, and anytime I ask her if she wants one of the two, her entire body will freeze in what looks like an impossible position of disbelief and hardly contained elation while she studies my face for any indication that I might be pulling her leg.

I have never seen Joey be anything but friendly and/or curious toward other adult dogs, and I know she would do well in a family with some mature canine companionship. That being said, she cannot be trusted around puppies younger than one month, and I wouldn’t leave her unsupervised around any other small animals like hamsters or guinea pigs.
She really is a wonderful little dog who has overcome so much, and she is such a fabulous companion!
To see this wonderful little being bloom into the confident and happy girl she was born to be would be a truly rewarding experience! Please consider giving Joey a reason to trust and love the human race by taking her home and loving her for the remainder of her years!

Joey’s health status:
Joey is 100 percent ready for her forever home! Heartworm negative, UTD on all her shots, de-wormed.

Joey’s rescue story:
What is known about Joey is that she was abandoned at a city pound, spent a good portion of the winter in an outdoor animal shelter, and most recently overcame a bout with heartworm. What becomes obvious about Joey upon meeting her, is that she so badly wants to forget her past and to trust people so that she doesn't have to be anxious and lonely all of the time.

At the shelter, Joey was most often observed crouched up in the corner of her pen, trying to stay warm and trying to be invisible. Something from her past was telling her she couldn't trust these humans that were walking up and down the hallways- that people will only make her situation worse. Fortunately for her, shelter staff and volunteers gently worked with her; hand feeding her food and treats, stroking her rigid body and every once in a while, coaxing her out of her corner and into the light of the day.

This little girl is such a joy to have around and she is living proof of what a dog can do with a second chance! If you are looking for an affectionate and energetic little friend with eternally inquisitive eyes and an overwhelming desire to please her closest friends, why not make her life complete by giving her a safe and loving home for the rest of her years?

This girl needs a foster...

Wow, I was amazed at Joey's progress yesterday. She is so curious when the volunteers get to the shelter. She paces up and down...looks around but as soon as someone approaches, she shies away. When I took her out 2 weeks ago, she totally froze up. Yesterday, she walked for a bit. I think she needs some 1:1 time to get used to humans, to learn that we are loving, gentle and not going to hurt her. In foster care, this girl's life is going to change TOTALLY. We should put up more pictures of her because this one doesn't do her justice.

annemariew's picture

Yes, Ada, she really freezes up. I spent a long time with her a few weeks ago, and she made huge progress in just an hour. She was starting to walk around and sniff things. She is going to make a great pet; how rewarding for someone to bring her to her full doggy confidence. Here are two more pics.

AdaS's picture

Hi Anne-marie,

Do you know how to go about changing her main picture. I think the one of the ones you have are much nicer.

stefaniee's picture

New photos coming soon. Joey got a hair trim from a volunteer, and is eager to show off her "new" self.

It is such a joy to see this little girl come out of her shell. She still stood all the way in the back of her cage today frightened, but she would come forward very tentatively for treats, and once I got her out of her cage, she seemed 100% more comfortable than the last time I had her out. I seriously think she's only been out of her cage 3x! She is VERY interested now when volunteers are walking around, and she comes all the way forward in her cage to see what's happening, and secretly, I think she hopes to get some attention.

I spent some time with Joey on Sunday and she was so mellow. Didn't make a sound. I carried her around for about 1/2hr and sat with her on my lap. I took her to a quiet area and she walked a few steps. She is so small (maybe 4kg). Winter outdoors will be very difficult for this little girl. She desperately needs to be sponsored for a health check to help her find a loving home! She's just adorable!!

Sofia's picture

Joey was sponsored for health chek up. Thank you, Dan!
She received vaccinations and de-wroming med in December 2011.
Unfortunatelly Joey tested positive for heart worms.
She really needs help right now - a caring foster or forevet home to start her treatment and to help her to become a healthy dog.
Please consider giving Joey a home!
We just received a donation of 100.000 won from a kind animal lover Amanda W. Thank you, Amanda!
Amanda sent her donation to our account in Wooribank (1002-240-455-293).

Joey needs a 2 month foster home (for now) so that she has a warm, safe place to recover from her heartworm treatment. If anyone would like to foster her please let us know! Her heartworm treatment at Chungwha will be paid for with money we have raised, but we still need a foster for her before we can start treatment.

stefaniee's picture

Offically an hour left of Christmas, so Joeys still holding out hope for a foster to help her out. If you would be able to provide some comfort, and a home for this awesome gal while she recovers from her heartworm treatment send Sofia a message ASAP ([email protected])!!

Joey seems to be settling quite well so far!! We are really excited to have her join our family for a little while!

clare_bell's picture

Lindsay, I was so overjoyed when you took Joey :) Thank you!! It makes me so happy to see her chilling in a home instead of chilling (literally) in a cage at the shelter. Best of luck with her treatment!

linhorobin's picture

Thanks, Clare! It's so great that she's got a whole lot of wonderful people thinking about her and rooting for her and wanting to help her, and she will be in tip-top shape before we know it!

linhorobin's picture

Joey's confidence improves everyday!! She has even started to play, and she walks around with her tail up most of the time!! She's a wonderful little dog! Once she starts treatment, I will update regularly on her progress.

julie's picture

OMG! I'm gonna cry! It's so nice to see her happy! She was so sad at the shelter.

clare_bell's picture

Yes, she really looks so HAPPY!!! :))) Go Joey!!

annemariew's picture

Wow, I never saw her tail up like that! That's amazing.

linhorobin's picture

Joey started heartworm treatment last weekend and is doing quite well so far. She wanted me to thank everyone for all of their donations and well-wishes. Thanks to all who have contributed to this girl's eventual recovery and adoption- she is definitely on the road to recovery!

AdaS's picture

Wow! She looks wonderful. Thank you for all you do for her.

Sofia's picture

Wow!!!!!

clare_bell's picture

Double wow!! So happy to see her pics, she deserves to be in a warm home and she looks like she is loving life!

linhorobin's picture

Just a quick update on Joey: She went to the Chunghwa Animal Hospital for her first heartworm injection on Wednesday, and she has been doing quite well since getting back from the vet. She hasn't seemed to be effected too much by her treatment so far, and takes her medicine (grudgingly) twice everyday. Apparently, she was a little bit nippy at the clinic, most likely due to all of the unfamiliar smells and people, and she certainly has her moments, even at home surrounded by her foster family, when she reverts back to her anxious, timid alter-ego we saw at the shelter. Mostly, though, she continues to surprise with her adaptability and willingness to trust people, despite having more than likely been abused or mistreated in the past.

clare_bell's picture

Aaaahh! She looks so PRETTY!!! What a precious girl!

annemariew's picture

Joey looks SO happy. She is like a totally different doggie--thank you for helping her!

AdaS's picture

Is this the same dog? It's incredible what a different (foster) environment can do for a dog!
Is it possible to replace her main pictures with some others?

linhorobin's picture

Joey just wanted to say a quick 'hello' to everyone and let everyone know she's doing fine! She's finished with her meds for now, and will go back to Chunghwa in about a week for a follow-up appointment to see how the treatment worked. She is continually grateful for all of the support and well-wishes she has been getting from so many wonderful people!

Hi Lindsay, I just had a call from ur churchi minister saying that there's a korean woman who is interested in Joey. Would u pls send Sofia([email protected])the application if it's in English, if Korean, u can cc me so that I can help screening the application.([email protected])
Thanks!!

linhorobin's picture

Hi Sylvia. I emailed you a response to this comment. Please get back to me to let me know what the next step is.

linhorobin's picture

Joey had her follow up appointment at the vet, and she is now officially heartworm free!!! While at the doctor's she also got two of five injections to get her up to date, and her first heartworm prevention for the season. She is on a roll, and seems to know it!! Ever since getting back from the vet, she has been a bundle of energy and snuggles! She has started playing with toys, and she even got my poodle, Ben (who very much prefers chasing balls), to wrestle with her!

annemariew's picture

This is a dream! Thank you for what you have done for sweet Joey.

clare_bell's picture

I can't believe it, Joey was so lucky to have found you Lindsay! Thank you so much for taking her in through her h/w treatment. I'm sure she'll find a home soon!

linhorobin's picture

Thanks so much everyone! It has been a very rewarding experience watching Joey change (except for the nervous/excited peeing, which is getting better bit by bit!), and it's so nice to see her acting like a dog! When I saw her pick up a toy for the first time, I almost cried! She has certainly got a little ways to go yet, but because of all the wonderful dog people there are out there, she's going to make the most of this second chance she's been given!

annemariew's picture

God, she is SO cute! Thank you , thank you, thank you, thank you!

MaryNJon's picture

Wow! She looks awesome! Just amazing. What a wonderful thing you have done for her. She is absolutely beautiful.

linhorobin's picture

Thanks so much! She's a great dog who will do really well in a stable home environment. Can't wait 'til she finds one!

clare_bell's picture

I didn't recognise her! Oh my goodness! Pretty little girl :)

stefaniee's picture

IS THIS JOEY?! hahahah omgish pardon my caps! I did not recognize her.. AT ALL!! Shes such a doll!! Such a different little girl! WOW!! Good job!

eveliens's picture

That's too bad he was too much for her, but she seems like such a great dog, I'm sure you'll find her a perfect home.

clare_bell's picture

Poor Joey, what a pity. Don't worry, the PERFECT forever home will come along for her. You're amazing for what you've done for her Lindsay!

linhorobin's picture

Here's a couple of clips of Joey relaxing in her foster home:

linhorobin's picture

Joey has always been really great with other dogs. Here's a clip of her playing with her foster brother, Ben.

clare_bell's picture

Squeal!! The way she does that with her head is just too cute!! And she has such big eyes!

clare_bell's picture

You've done such a wonderful job with her Lindsay! I love her transformation :)

linhorobin's picture

Thanks Clare!! I sure wish I was having more success getting her adopted, though!!

marlajoy's picture

Some dogs are so awesome and it shocks me that no one adopts them - Luna, Joey, Lulu... - so adorable, so great, and no forever family!

linhorobin's picture

Joey sits very nicely for her dinner or for treats! She is also fully house-trained and excellent with other (adult) dogs!

linhorobin's picture

Irrefutable proof that Joey is overcoming her fear of strangers! This is the first time she has met most of these people, and she is quite happy to be in their presence! I'm sooooo proud of her!
